Summary

The aim of the study is to quantify the economic gains in terms of value added that could be realised by increasing the employment rate of older workers in Germany. In order to do so, we first analyse the current labour market situation of older people using micro and macro data. Based on this, we develop different scenarios of the future development of the employment rate of older workers in Germany. Next, we compute the growth effects that emerge in the different scenarios to allow us to quantify the economic gains in terms of value added. Finally, we scrutinize which policy measures are suitable to achieve the increased employment rates, as well as the gains in value added, underlying the different scenarios.
