Summary

The study computes the effects of demographic change in Germany on the pension system. Against the background of an ageing population, we analyse the implications of different future paths of the labour market participation of elder persons for the pension system. In order to do so, we use a simulation model of the pension system and compute the level of pension payments and the contribution rate to the pension system in different scenarios. These scenarios differ in their assumptions concerning the three components of labour market participation of elder persons, namely the labour market participation rate, the unemployment rate, and the amount of time worked. The scenarios are based on a preceding study (The growth effects of an increased labour market participation of older employees in Germany) analyzing the effects of demographic change in Germany on the growth potential of the German economy.
