Summary
This research project is jointly implemented with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and Center for Development Research (ZEF). The research intends to yield policy options for reducing the costs of tradeoffs and promoting positive synergies across the water, energy and food security nexus at local and regional levels in the Eastern Nile Basin. RWI contributes specifically to the research design and implementation of a case study on decentralized energy demand and supply in the Nile Basin of Ethiopia. The case study looks into the socio-economic and environmental scope for developing reliable, affordable and gender-conscious energy supply and distribution systems. The case study assesses potential effects on food security, irrigation and drinking water access, and natural resource (e.g. forest) quality.
