Communications Officer; Researcher

Katja Fels

Katja Fels joined the RWI in July 2014. She works as consultant for economic policy communication and conducts research on behavioral economics in the research group “Sustainability and Governance”.

Katja obtained her Master degree in Journalism and Political Science at Dortmund University and Ruhr-University Bochum in 2009. She moreover graduated from the Australian National University (ANU), Canberra, in Economic Policy in 2008 (Graduate Diploma). In her thesis, she conducted an empirical analysis of behaviorally motivated interventions with respect to the communication of controversial reform ideas in Australia.

Her current research focusses on the effectiveness of interventions motivated by behavioral insights, also known as “nudges”, in areas like energy conservation, education, and taxation. For this, she has been conducting large-scale randomized controlled trials with external cooperation partners. In 2017, she was a research fellow at the Crawford School of Public Policy, ANU.

Next to her university education, Katja is a formally trained journalist (Volontariat). She worked for different media in Germany and abroad. She also held the position of press officer at Germany’s largest scholarship foundation, the German Academic Scholarship Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes), where she started as scientific officer in 2009. At RWI, she supports researchers in communicating their scientific results to a non-scientific audience.
