Prof. Dr. Jörg Peters

Jörg Peters is a specialist in access to modern energy in developing countries and the evaluation of development interventions. At RWI, Jörg is heading the research group “Climate Change in Developing Countries”. He is Professor at University of Passau and Visiting Associate Professor at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. His research focus is on the economics of poverty and on the effectiveness of development policy.

In this context, Jörg leads several research projects that study rural markets for improved technologies such as off-grid solar and firewood saving cookstoves in different African countries. He furthermore led an international consortium that was appointed by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs to evaluate development activities in the energy sector in four countries spanning Africa and Asia. In addition, he designed the methodology and supervised the survey implementation of various evaluation studies for rural electrification and improved cookstove dissemination programs in Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Indonesia, Rwanda, Mozambique, Senegal, Uganda, Tanzania, and Zambia. Jörg has advised various international organizations such as the United Nations, World Bank, 3ie, FMO, MCC, and GIZ.

Jörg studied economics and statistics in Cologne and Paris and holds a PhD from Ruhr-University Bochum. His research findings have been published in leading journals, for example Journal of Health Economics, Energy Journal, and the World Bank Economic Review.
