RWI/ISL Container Throughput Index: World trade recovering slightly

Press release from 26 April 2019

The Container Throughput Index of the RWI – Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) increased to 136.9 points in March according to the current flash estimate.

The most important results:

• The Container Throughput Index of the RWI – Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) increased to 136.9 points in March according to the current flash estimate. The strong decrease of the revised February value of 134.5 could thus be partly compensated.

• Especially in Chinese ports container handling volumes recovered in March after the Chinese New Year.

• Overall the Index was very volatile during the past months, making the interpretation of monthly variation difficult. The quarterly average for Q1 2019 reached 136.6 points, just slightly below the previous quarter’s average.

• The flash estimate for March is based on figures provided by 49 ports representing approximately 76% of the total volume included in the Index.

• The RWI/ISL Container Throughput Index for April 2019 will be published on 21 May 2019.

RWI head of Macroeconomics Roland Döhrn on the recent development of the Index: “For a few months now, the Container Throughput Index has fluctuated strongly. However, a collapse, feared due to trade conflicts, has not yet materialised. The underlying trend of the Index is sidewards.”

About the RWI/ISL Container Throughput Index:

The Index is based on data continuously collected from 83 world container ports by ISL as part of its market monitoring. Together, they account for around 60 per cent of worldwide container handling. Because large parts of international merchandise trade are transported by ship, the development of port handling is a good indicator for world trade. As many ports release information about their activities only two weeks after the end of the respective month, the RWI/ISL Container Throughput Index is a reliable early indicator for the development of international merchandise trade and hence for the activity of the global economy.
