The most important results:

• The Container Throughput Index of RWI and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) increased slightly in September by 0.7 points to 139.5.

• At the same time, the values for three previous months have been revised slightly downwards

• The plus in September should not be overestimated, it lies in the blur area of the flash estimate. The basic tendency is probably rather sideways.

• Nevertheless, container traffic is still developing slightly better than global trade as a whole. One reason is that the foreign trade, which has recently been especially weakening, is underrepresented in the index within the EU.

• The flash estimate for September is based on data for 46 ports, which account for just under three-quarters of the transshipment volume shown in the index.

• The RWI/ISL Container Throughput Index for October 2019 will be published on November 21, 2019.

RWI Economic Director Roland Döhrn comments on the development of the index: "Container traffic has so far defied the difficult framework conditions, but despite the plus it does not support a renewed growth in world trade. “

About the RWI/ISL container handling index:

The index includes the data on container transhipment in 83 international ports, which are continuously collected by the ISL as part of its market observation and account for around 60 percent of global container transhipment. Since international trade is mainly handled by sea, container transhipments allow reliable conclusions to be drawn about world trade. Because many ports already report on their activities two weeks after the end of a month, the RWI/ISL Container Handling Index is a reliable early indicator of the development of international trade in processed goods and thus also of global economic activity.
