Dr. Bernd Beber

Bernd Beber has been a research scientist in RWI’s Berlin office since January 2020. He holds an A.B. summa cum laude from Harvard University and received his Ph.D. with distinction in Political Science from Columbia University. He previously held a research fellowship at the University of Oxford’s Nuffield College, served as an Assistant Professor at New York University, has taught at Berlin’s Humboldt University, and most recently worked as a research fellow in the research units Migration, Integration, Transnationalization and Institutions and Political Inequality at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center, where he continues to hold a visiting appointment. His work focuses on the political economy of conflict and development, the role of international institutions in fragile societies, and the causes and consequences of migration, with a focus on causal inference and sub-Saharan Africa. He has served as co-principal investigator for field projects in Nigeria, Liberia, Sudan and South Sudan, and is currently a lead researcher for a set of rigorous impact evaluations in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire mandated by the German development ministry (BMZ) as part of its Special Initiative on Training and Job Creation. He is a research working group member for the Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA), Sweden’s agency for peace, security and development, and a member of an impact evaluation academic advisory board at the International Organization for Migration (IOM)'s Global Migration Data Analysis Centre (GMDAC).
