Project: Monitoring GTZ Rural Electrification Interventions in Benin

Project Duration

02/2006 - 12/2008 (finalized)

Commissioned by

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GTZ), NL Agency

Project Team (RWI)

Dr. Gunther Bensch, Prof. Dr. Jörg Peters (Chief)

Between early 2006 and late 2008, RWI monitored the on-grid electrification intervention in Benin implemented by German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) and provided backstopping to the local staff. Access to modern energy is improved in twelve villages in the North-West of the country by means of grid extension and densification. During several missions on behalf of GTZ and NL Agency, RWI assessed the project progress and developed applicable adaptations in project design and planning. One of the core project-specific recommendations was to expand grid densification activities. Decentralized electrification technologies like photovoltaic should only be applied at remote social institutions such as health centers or schools. Apart from these short term assignments, RWI accompanies the project through permanent advisory and backstopping services and has been - in cooperation with Agence Française de Développement (AFD) - involved in preparing the proposal to the EU Energy Facility for a project up-scaling. Within the framework of this Energy Facility, more than 60 additional villages in rural Benin will be connected to the grid.
