Dr. Katja Fels

Katja Fels has been head of the Communications Department at RWI since May 2018. From July 2014 to April 2018, she worked as an economic policy communications officer in the Communications Department. Since July 2014, she has also been a researcher in the research group "Sustainability and Governance".

Katja studied journalism with a focus on economics at the universities of Dortmund and Bochum (Diplom 2009). She completed a postgraduate study programme in Economic Policy at the Australian National University (ANU), Canberra, in 2008. In her dissertation at the University of Bochum (2021), she explored the chances and risks of nudging for evidence-based policy making.

Next to her university education, Katja is a formally trained editor (Volontariat). She worked as a journalist for different media in Germany and abroad, among them Süddeutsche Zeitung, ZDF and dpa. 

Her current research focusses on the effectiveness of interventions motivated by behavioral insights, also known as “nudges”, in areas like energy conservation, education, taxation, and science communication. For this, she has been conducting large-scale randomized controlled trials with external cooperation partners. In 2017, she was a research fellow at the Crawford School of Public Policy, ANU.
