The main results:

• The container throughput index of the RWI - Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Institute for Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) rose again sharply in October, seasonally adjusted, from (revised) 119.6 to 122.6. It thus reached another all-time high.

• The value for September has only been revised slightly downwards by 0.1 points compared to the flash estimate.

• The increase is on a broad basis. Both the Chinese ports and those outside of China recorded a clear plus.

• The North Range Index, which provides information on economic development in the northern euro area and in Germany, also improved significantly. At 114.1, it is only 1.1 points below the maximum value reached before the Corona crisis.

• The current flash estimate for the container throughput index is based on information from 46 ports which handle around 70 percent of the throughput shown in the index.

• The RWI/ISL container throughput Index for November 2020 will be published on December 21, 2020.

Regarding the development of the container throughput index, RWI economic director Torsten Schmidt says: ‚World trade also developed extremely dynamically in October. The first slump due to the Corona crisis seems to have been overcome. It remains to be seen how the recent restrictions on economic activity to contain the pandemic will affect international trade.‘

About the RWI/ISL container throughput Index:

The index includes the data on container transhipment in 91 international ports, which are continuously collected by the ISL as part of its market observation and account for around 60 percent of global container transhipment.

Since international trade is mainly handled by sea, container transhipments allow reliable conclusions to be drawn about world trade. Because many ports already report on their activities two weeks after the end of a month, the RWI/ISL Container Handling Index is a reliable early indicator of the development of international trade in processed goods and thus also of global economic activity.

Data series for individual ports are available in the ISL Monthly Container Port Monitor.
