Business activity in decline

The economy in Germany has slowed noticeably during the course of 2008. RWI Essen is forecasting growth in real gross domestic product (GDP) to come to 1.7% for 2008. In so doing, RWI Essen has lowered its June 2008 forecast by 0.5 percentage points. This slack business period will presumably continue through the second half of the year. Looking into the coming year, RWI Essen is anticipating ...

CO2-emissions trading: Effects on power prices and energy-intensive industries

RWI Essen: ECB should raise its key rate

RWI Essen supports an increase in key interest rates by the ECB. In the economists' estimation, this would enable the central bank to pursue its primary aim and preserve price stability in the Euro zone. On the other hand, this clear and comprehensible action would preserve the bank's own credibility. If it fails to act, there is a risk of inflation getting out of control and significantly more restrictive intervention becoming necessary at a later date. This would have much greater negative effects on economic development than ...

Continuing along the path to consolidation while bolstering growth forces

The German Federal Government would be well advised to continue along its path toward budget consolidation and to use budget surpluses - predicted to appear as of 2010 - to lower taxes. This is the conclusion reached in a current study conducted by RWI Essen. It is based upon a forecast of government revenues and expenditures for the years 2008 to 2012, this being based in turn on the Federal Government's medium-term projection for ...

RWI Essen raises GDP forecast for 2008 and reduces it for 2009

RWI Essen has raised its forecast of economic growth for 2008 by 0.5 percentage points to 2.2% and at the same time lowered its forecast for 2009 by 0.3 percentage points to 1.5%. With this adjustment, the institute is on the one hand reacting to the unexpectedly strong increase in Gross Domestic Product at the start of this year. On the other hand, it is taking account of the fact that indications of weakened growth are increasing ...

2008 European Football Championships: National sentiments influence betting patterns

Patriotic feelings among soccer fans are reflected in the odds given on bets. As is revealed in a survey recently conducted by RWI Essen and Humboldt University in Berlin in advance of the UEFA Euro 2008, the odds quoted by bookmakers in several countries are influenced by whether the bets are on one's own team or on another country's team. The distortions are ...

German economy in an interim low

RWI Essen is sticking with its December 2007 estimate and continues to forecast real growth in gross domestic product (GDP) at 1.7% in 2008. The institute does indeed feel that the strong appreciation of the euro, rising prices for natural resources and less favorable loan terms for companies will slow the tempo of expansion. The German economy seems, however, to have entered the year with more momentum than previously assumed. Expansion is being hindered by ...

Hospital Rating Report 2008: Quality and profitability are not incompatible

In its fourth issue, the Hospital Rating Report examines for the first time the interrelationship between the quality of medical services and the economics of hospital operations. The result: economy (and profitability) need not be achieved at the expense of quality. There even appears to be a link between economic inefficiency and quality problems. This study - prepared jointly by the RWI Essen, the Institute for Healthcare Business GmbH and the ADMED GmbH - also examines the consequences of ...
